Heard On Rumor wire......New Cuts At KHA; Walmart Dissatisfied
In rumors that have reached me from both within and without KHA there are at least some new job cuts. Additionally there are rumors circulating that more and more Walmart is diverting work to other firms because of the quality of service it is receiving from KHA. If you are currently employed on a Walmart team....pay very very close attention to any more slowdowns....Considering KHA' corporate policy toward severance or any other transition help it may be time to jump ship. The job market is slow....and searching now may provide you with the soft landing you will need in this horrible economy. GOOD LUCK!!!!

Company in MD / VA area
If you are in this area or are willing to relocate, check out Bowman Consulting at www.bowmanconsulting.com.
They are a multi-discipline firm, with engineering, planning, surveying and environmental sciences divisions. A small but fast growing company with advertised opportunities. Looks like a winner to me.

Kimley-Horn and Associates Best Places to work NOT
Remember when you were hired and Kimley bragged about its inclusion on varioius lists of best places to work?
Now that we know that this is not the case....make your voices heard. Contact the following companies and tell them why you think that Kimley does not belong on that list: If you click on a link it will load your mail client with the address filled in for you.
The people that do Forbes list
Civil Engineering News
Apparently the person you want to contact is Rachel Ward-Sullivan

Some Job links
Here are a couple of links to places that may have jobs in FL. My recommendation is to get your 'stuff' out there in as many places as possible, and even if a company isn't advertising for a position right now, they may find one once they see how well qualified you are. They can't hire you if they don't know you are available.
www.pbsj.com This is another multi-disciplinary civil engineering firm. They are hiring, not much in FL, but some.
http://www.tetratech.com/portal/site/TetraTech/ This company does a lot of environmental remediation, has offices nationwide. Look to have quite a number of jobs available throughout Florida especially if you have strong environmental skills. From their web site: "About Tetra Tech: Tetra Tech provides responsible resource management and sustainable infrastructure services that encompass the full life cycle of solutions. We use our broad base of expert resources to dedicate ourselves to our clients' needs, offering innovative and cost-effective solutions to complex world problems. "
www.myflorida.com (check this regularly, new jobs are posted daily it seems. You can submit your resume one time here and any employer using this site to locate employees can get it from there)
Also, look into county/city planning departments. With recent cutbacks, jobs may be scarce, but things always change

Nasty "gotcha" in Kimley-Horn 401(k)
When we got Kimley-Horn's 401(k) prospectus, we scanned it...and tossed it. Now that we have been terminated we find a very very nasty provision in it. Even if you are 100% vested you can only pull the first $50k that kimley has contributed for a period of 5 years. This is true even if you are have less than 5 years to retirement. Given the somewhat limited aspects of Kimley's 401k choices, this can be a very hazardous provision.
When the T Rowe Price Rollover consultant was contacted and this provision surfaced, he was quite suprised and said that of all the plans he is responsible for kimley's was the only one with this provision.
We could possibly understand this if the you were allowed to buy Kimley stock in the 401(k) because it in the case of a mass firing as has been occuring, it could severly depress the stock if everybody bailed out by rolling over their 401(k). There doesn't seem to be any other reason.
It would be interesting to find out if this also applies to an inherited 401(k).....in other words if you die are your beneficiaries going to be hamstrung by this provision?
While we are on this subject.....Kimley let us have some choices in the 401(k) that cover periods like this with the dollar falling drastically. Specifically how about a mutual fund that specializes in commodities. And on the fixed income/stable value side how about an option to invest in TIPS. I remember only too well what happened to the dollar when it was devalued; I really don't want to see my money disappearing day by day even if the numbers shown on the screen claim it is appreciating.

Kimley-Horn and Associates, Urban Resource Group Fire 20% of Workforce
Kimley-Horn and Associates and it's subsidiary Urban Resource Group has fired a rumored 20% of its workforce. Cutting across all lines but seeming to concentrate on higher salaried staff age 50 or older(including stockholders), most were let go with a severance package consisting of extending the employee's health insurance to the end of the month in which they were terminated and an offer of "If you need help with your resume...call us". At this time we are unaware of any employee being given any type of severance package.
We are all aware of the downturn in the construction market, and the economy generally as a whole. However two additional factors are rumored to be responsible. Apparently a large number of senior stockholders are retiring and Kimley has to repurchase an inordinately large amount of stock rumored to be in excess of $100m. The second seems to be an attempt to drastically reduce salary costs by reducing older mid-level professional employees with interns and new hires. In one office 60% of the employees were over 50.
Another office gave a month notice...to get paid for the days and not accrue any personal time 'debits' you must work at least 4-1/2 hrs a day.
In a sad commentary on the Human Resource department's management ability the main computer system continued to send out "Congratulations on your anniversary and we look forward to many more" messages to terminated employees.
We have revised this posting effective 05/08/2008 since we believe there were some inaccuracies in the previous information. We apologize for this and any discomfort it has caused.
